A teacher performance improvement plan does not have to be a negative experience between administrators and teachers.

PIPs are meant to give struggling teachers the targeted support they need to improve and grow. That means principals share in the responsibility of providing support and resources to help teachers accomplish their goals for improvement.

The Network for Educator Effectiveness’ Guide to Effective Teacher Performance Improvement Plans is a comprehensive resource that walks through the PIP process from start to finish, including the following sections:

  • When is it time to write a PIP?
  • How to introduce a PIP to a teacher
  • Starting the PIP process
  • Three phases of the PIP action plan
  • Examples of evidence for four types of PIPs
  • Completing the PIP
  • Adjusting your mindset about PIPs
